Information about the conference and travel

The SCCS Hungary starts at 21:00 on the 30th of August in Tihany with an evening get-together. To make this event more international we would like to ask you to bring your local food and/or drink for the get together evening to increase the diversity of choices :-).

A shuttle bus will be provided from Budapest to the conference venue and back. The bus will leave from Budapest at 18:00 on the 30th of August and arrive back to Budapest from Tihany at ca. 16:00 on the 3rd of September. Prior to the bus transfer students are welcomed to join an optional visit to the Budapest Zoo from 13:00-17:30 as a free warming up event of the conference.

 

Meeting in Budapest – 12:30PM (visit to the Zoo) and/or 18:00 (transfer to Tihany)

The meeting point is both times under the statue of Archangel Gabriel in the middle of the Heroes’s Square (Hősök tere in Hungarian), one of the major squares in Budapest. The pre-conference excursion to the Budapest Zoo will start at 13:00, the Zoo is in walking distance from the meeting point.

Taxi

Taxi reservations can be made in person at the Főtaxi booths located at the exits at Terminals 2A and 2B. A ride to the city centre should typically cost around 6500 HUF (22 EUR) depending on traffic conditions.

Public transport

The Nr. 200E buses run between Kőbánya-Kispest metro station and the airport. The ride from the metro station to Terminal 2 takes about 30 minutes. To go straight to the Heroes' Square you have to take the bus 200E to the 'Kőbánya-Kispest' metro terminal, from there take the metro (M3) to the 'Deák Ferenc tér' and change to the other metro line M1 (yellow line) towards the 'Mexikói út'. The Heroes' Square is the seventh stop.

You will need two tickets, one for the bus and one for the metro (no new ticket is needed when you change from M3 to M1).

By public transport

Tihany can be reached easiest by buses departing from the Népliget Bus Station. To arrange your travel, please visit the website of Volánbusz (the Hungarian coach company). Alternatively you can travel by rail, for the timetables please visit the website of the Hungarian State Railways.

 

By car

Field trip in Tihany

The field trip will be a 3-4 hour walk, visiting the surrounding area of the venue as it offers many impressive sights. We plan to visit the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, the Lavender House, the visitor centre of the Balaton Uplands National Park, the Inner Lake with a restoration of Hungarian grey cattle and European ground squirrel populations and the Golden House geyser cone. The fee of the excursion is included in the conference registration.

Recommended clothing: comfortable urban clothes and shoes for walking, rainy weather may occur.

 

Excursion to the Kis-Balaton

The field trip starts after breakfast at 7:30 and ends around 13:00/14:00 also in Tihany. The impressive area of the Kis-Balaton is part of the Balaton Uplands National Park, where a wetland reconstruction was conducted and led to a rich avifauna. As an alternative program for rainy days, guests can visit a traditional Hungarian farm.
